What is inside a wheelchair-accessible porta potty?

The PolyJohn Comfort XL has more than 16 square feet of floor inside a 62-by-62-inch shell. The door opens 32 inches wide and 74 inches tall. The floor sits at ground level with no step or lip. Handrails line every wall at 33 inches high.

A standard unit is 43.5 inches wide with a raised floor. A wheelchair cannot roll into one, and there is no room to turn.

Why we say "wheelchair-accessible"

The manufacturer describes the Comfort XL as wheelchair accessible, so that is our term. People also call it a handicap porta potty or an ADA porta potty. We answer to all 3 names.

The ADA looks at the whole site, including the path to the door. A single unit cannot meet those rules by itself, so check the route and the ground too.

How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

The 2010 ADA Standards, §213.2, set a floor of 5% accessible units in each cluster. The minimum is 1. A cluster of 10 standard units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 30 needs 2. Our sizing method adds at least 1 for any public event.

1–2011, placed closest to the path
21–4022, one at each end of the row
41–6033, spread across clusters

Keep the two ideas apart. The legal minimum comes from the ADA Standards. Our suggestion goes further, because a guest with a walker needs the handrails even at a backyard party.

To size the rest of your order, use the porta potty count calculator. Planning a reception? See wedding restroom choices.

Where can an accessible porta potty be placed?

An accessible porta potty needs a flat, hard surface such as a driveway, patio, pavers or a parking lot. The unit takes about 5 by 5 feet. We recommend a clear, level space at least 60 inches across in front of the door. That lets a wheelchair turn and line up.

The 60-inch figure comes from the 2010 ADA Standards. They describe turning space as a circle 60 inches in diameter. We use it outside the door as a working rule.

  • Hard ground only: grass, mulch and loose gravel make wheels sink, worst of all after rain.
  • Short, smooth route: keep the path from the tables free of cords, hoses and steps.
  • Truck access: at 62 inches wide and about 325 pounds, the unit will not pass a 4-foot side gate.
  • Door direction: face the door toward the path, not toward a curb or ditch.

Comparing all unit sizes? The porta potty types guide lists each footprint side by side.

Handicap porta potty questions from Conroe renters

Here are 6 short answers for anyone renting a wheelchair-accessible unit. They cover price, the ADA, grass, side gates, family reunions and booking time. Each one starts with the fact, then adds a tip. Prices listed are starting rates before Texas sales tax.

How much is a handicap porta potty?

A wheelchair-accessible unit starts at $245 per weekend or per 28 days. Delivery and pickup are added as their own line, then tax.

Does your handicap one meet ADA rules?

The manufacturer lists the Comfort XL as wheelchair accessible, and that is how we describe it. ADA rules also cover the route, the ground and the number of units. Check with your venue or permit office.

Can it go on the grass in my backyard?

Grass is a poor base for a wheelchair, and it gets worse after rain. Pick a driveway, patio or paver area close to the party instead.

Will it fit through my side gate?

The Comfort XL is 62 inches wide, so it will not pass through a standard 4-foot gate. Plan a spot the truck can reach from the street or driveway.

Grandpa uses a walker. Do I need one for the family reunion?

Rent 1 when any guest uses a wheelchair, walker or scooter. The ground-level floor and 33-inch handrails make the visit safer for them.

How far ahead do I need to book it?

Book the accessible unit when you book the rest of your order. Same-day delivery works when you call by 12 PM, Monday through Saturday, and a unit is open.
